Malibu Barbie may hail from California, but for the next two weeks she’ll be a Jersey girl.

The Barbie Malibu Pop-Up Truck is continuing its 2022 tour with a stop on Saturday, June 4, in Edison at Menlo Park Mall, and on Saturday, June 11, in Paramus at Westfield Garden State Plaza.

In Edison, the truck will be parked in the grassy area near Macy’s from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. In Paramus, it will be parked around the corner from the mall entrance near Capital Grille from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Visitors can purchase retro-inspired merchandise by credit card only ranging from $12 to $75 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Malibu Barbie. Popular items include denim jackets embroidered with the Barbie logo, pink hoodies with the Barbie logo, tie-dye bucket hats, beach towels, tote bags, enamel pins, embroidered patches and mugs.

“Everything is beachy, laid-back vibes,” said operations manager Hannie Peng. “The Malibu Barbie theme is just a beloved one for Barbie fans — it doesn’t have to be just for the California girl. Anyone can relate to her free spirit and her love of fun in the sun.”

That’s been evident from truck visitors, who often dress in Barbie-themed garb. Many visitors are adults who grew up playing with Barbies, and bring their children or grandchildren to the truck with them, Peng said.

“We attract a lot of the older generations because they’re like, ‘I haven’t seen this stuff in so long and now I get the chance to get the merch I didn’t get when I was younger,’ “ she continued.

The Barbie pop-up truck launched in the fall of 2019 with its Barbie Truck Totally Throwback Tour, which was extended into last summer due to the pandemic. Merchandise was 1980s and '90s themed, with items such as fanny packs.

After the Malibu Barbie tour concludes, a new Barbie theme and line of merchandise will be announced for the next tour.

The truck, which has now been to over 50 cities, began as a celebration of Barbie’s 60th birthday, as well as a re-introduction to the Barbie brand following its new focus on inclusivity.

“Her image has changed and her whole motto now is ‘you can be whoever you want to be,’ so we thought it was a good time to reintroduce Barbie to the world,” Peng said. “There isn’t a ton of Barbie merch, so we thought it was a good way to let the Barbie fans wear their love for Barbie.”
