The Westport Country Playhouse has announced a new podcast series titled: “Stories from the Playhouse.”

The music group, South for Winter, shown, is going to bring an eclectic, and cool “Nashville” blues music vibe North to the Voices Café at The Unitarian Church in Westport, May 7, at 8 p.m., livestreamed, and in person. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Westport resident Michael Brennecke has received an Honroable Mention for his Patricks Cenote, oil on panel type of artwork, in the Rowayton Arts Center’s “Spring Juried Show,” that is on view at the center through May 14. The music group South for Winter will perform at the Voices Café at The Unitarian Church in Westport, at 8 p.m. on May 7. It will be livestreamed and in person at 10 Lyons Plains Road.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit a variety of community organizations under The Unitarian Church in Westport’s programs.

The Westport Country Playhouse has announced a new monthly podcast series, “Stories from the Playhouse.”

The podcast will feature guests from all corners of the theater world who will share stories about their experiences. It is hosted by Westport Country Playhouse Assistant Artistic Director Liam Lonegan.

The series launched April 20 on the Spotify streaming service, the Libsyn classic feed, and on the Playhouse’s website at westportplayhouse.org.

The first episode is “Redefining Normal” with Marcos Santana, the musical director and chereographer for “Next to Normal.” Santana tells his story, from growing up in Puerto Rico, to performing on Broadway. He also sheds light on bringing the musical to the stage at the Playhouse.

Each episode of the podcast is 35 minutes. Upcoming guests will be announced soon.

Staples High School’s Inklings News has become a 2022 School Newspapers Online distinguished site.

The program recognizes student journalism programs that have outstanding online publications.

The staff of the publication has earned the status for the month of April.

Before being awarded the title of SNO Distinguished Site, Inklings News earned online digital badges in the areas of site excellence, story page design, writing, multimedia, coverage and audience engagement.

Sixty-seven schools earned all six of the badges and the honor of becoming an SNO Distinguished site.

Winners were previously announced by the judge, Greg Shea, who is also a senior museum preparator at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.

Abstract painter Linda Colletta has opened a Westport Studio Concept studio space with her solo art exhibition that is titled “Electro-Woven.”

An opening reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the space, at 33 Elm St. in Westport.

The space will remain open to the public through September.

Colletta’s goal for the studio space, is to make “real art” more approachable and accessible to all people. She also wants to open conversation, and dialogue about what abstract art is, and how to tell the difference between what is real, and what is not.

She also plans to keep the studio open late on Thursday nights and make the studio a welcoming funky lounge space.

The Westport Police Department is partnering with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for the 22nd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

The event will take place at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, at 21 Imperial Ave.

Collection sites can only accept pills or patches. Vape pens where batteries can be removed, will be able to be disposed of at the event.

The service is free, and anonymous. No questions asked.

Residents are also reminded that a year-round collection bin is located in the lobby of the Westport Police Department headquarters at 50 Jesup Road . Prescription drugs can be properly disposed of at any time rather than people waiting for designated collection dates to dispose of the product.

The Westport Human Services Department is going to begin accepting qualifying resident applications for the Connecticut Renters’ Program starting Monday.

The program provides income-based reimbursement for senior citizens, who are age 65, and, or individuals with disabilities, who are currently collecting Social Security, or Social Security Disability income.

The rebate is calculated based on a graduated income scale, combined with the amount of rent and utility payments, excluding telephone.

The maximum income for a single person to qualify is $38,100. The amount for a married couple to qualify is $46,400.

Applicants must also meet a one-year state residency requirement.

The deadline to apply for the state funded program is Sept. 29.

Westport residents, who wish to apply for the program, must contact the department at 203-341-1067, or by emailing kwitt@westportct.gov, to complete the application process for the program by appointment.

Walk-ins will not be accepted.
