While many Marvel superheroes have recognizable costumes or logos, others don't wear any costumes at all.

In the early days of the Marvel superhero universe, costumes were all but essential for a new hero blossoming onto the scene. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor, and many others established themselves early on as popular and easily recognizable heroes thanks to iconic costumes, logos, and accessories.

While Marvel heroes had costumes for a while, Marvel deals a lot more in street-level heroes than DC, as well as heroes who have limited or no control over their powers. This leads to several heroes who don't wear a costume but prefer to fight crime in their street clothes. Most of the heroes in Marvel don’t wear capes, and many don’t wear any kind of costume at all.

Many fans might consider the Hulk’s iconic purple shorts as a costume, but Bruce Banner has been transforming in different clothes since the day the Hulk was made. While the Hulk has certainly donned a few signature outfits over the years, specifically noteworthy in his Planet Hulk days or even Joe Fixit’s zoot suit, he is generally wearing a ripped version of whatever Bruce Banner was wearing before he transformed.

It’s a good thing that Bruce has invested in so many pairs of expandable underwear. If he hadn't, most of those Hulk comics wouldn’t have passed the Comics Code.

Johnny Blaze was just an above-average motorcycle stuntman who turned into the Spirit of Vengeance when he made a deal with the demon Mephisto, the devil of the Marvel Universe, to spare his mentor’s life. Now, Johnny Blaze controls the Hellfire, riding his Hell Cycle and judging those he deems evil with his Penance Stare.

Ghost Rider carries out his vengeance in style, sporting his signature leather motorcycle stunt suit. This wasn’t explicitly stated in the deal with Mephisto, but he seemed to also give Johnny the power of fireproof clothing as well.

Born Carl Lucas, Luke Cage is a premier Marvel hero. He is a former Avenger, Thunderbolt, Fantastic Four member, and a current Defender and Hero for Hire with his partner Iron Fist. Cage volunteered for an experimental variation of the Super-Soldier project called the Bernstein Process while incarcerated.

The Bernstein Process granted Luke Cage accelerated cell regeneration and gave him superstrength and near-invulnerable skin. As such, Luke Cage has never had to rely on gimmicks such as costumes to get his point across. His personality provides all the flash he needs.

Super-powered private investigator Jessica Jones has had a wild life. While introduced much later in the Marvel continuity, her origins are woven throughout Marvel history, specifically with Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Fantastic Four. Jessica Jones was the only survivor when her family crashed their car into a military convoy carrying radioactive materials.

After the accident, Jessica Jones was granted powers. However, these powers didn’t fully manifest until an event that caused a massive amount of cosmic radiation: The Fantastic Four’s first encounter with Galactus. After that point, Jessica could fly, had super strength, accelerated healing, and all the little bonuses that come from surviving radioactive accidents in the Marvel Universe. Jessica has worn outfits and costumes over the years, but none have really seemed to stick.

Groot is a humanoid tree-like being that prefers to walk around and fight galactic crime in the nude. Groot is a Flora colossus from Planet X who never got along with his own species. He was exiled by the Arbor Masters of his planet and decided to explore space.

Upon reaching adulthood, Groot was imprisoned by the Kree where he met his longtime partner and best friend, Rocket Raccoon. Soon after the Annihilation: Conquest event where most of his body was destroyed and he regrew from a twig, he joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Frank Castle’s signature death’s head skull is definitely one of the more recognizable superhero logos. However, Punisher usually just wears a black t-shirt with the logo on it. Formerly a US Marine, Frank Castle turned into the violent vigilante, The Punisher, after his family was slain for accidentally witnessing a mob hit.

Since that day, Punisher made it his life mission to eliminate organized crime by whatever means necessary. While occasionally granted superpowers by some storylines, Castle usually relies on his peak physical condition and mastery of martial arts and firearms to solve his problems.

Charles Xavier is the founder of the X-Men and one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe. He is an expert in mutant biology and physiology and has made it his life goal to establish peace and understanding between mutant-kind and humans.

These days, Professor X may be considered by most to have a costume, but for the longest time, he was just a bald man in a suit. He only suited up with the X-Men whenever he temporarily regained control of his legs for whatever reason.

Super spy and director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury is one of the smartest and sneakiest men in the Marvel Universe. As a soldier in World War II, he fought alongside the Howling Commandos to take down HYDRA, the secret scientific division of the Nazis.

Nick Fury moved from the battlefield to intelligence once the Cold War began, quelling the remaining sleeper cells of HYDRA whenever possible. He is known for his iconic eye patch but has usually dressed in formal civilian attire, while occasionally sporting a S.H.I.E.L.D. jumpsuit.

Norrin Radd, also known as the Silver Surfer, is a former Herald of Galactus and one of the noblest and most powerful cosmic entities. His silver body and surfboard make him instantly recognizable, but he almost never wears any clothing, especially when in action in space.

The Silver Surfer is labeled a potential universal-level threat by the Nova Corps because of his Power Cosmic granted to him by Galactus. This allows the Silver Surfer to manipulate energy with as much force as a planet or star.

Some fans may argue that Hercules Panhellenios’s singlet and crown count as a costume, but it is more of a comic book's take on Ancient Greek clothing. Son of Zeus, Hercules was given demigod attributes such as God-like strength and invulnerability. He is often portrayed as a friendly rival to Thor, both of them competing over who is the stronger son of the main god of their respective mythologies.

It is a mystery how the Pantheon of Greek Gods and Norse Gods can exist so literally at the same time in the Marvel Universe. This fact might be why Thor has so many more stories than Hercules.
