Remember when luxury watch designer Tag Heuer launched a limited edition Super Mario watch? Yeah, the one that cost $2,150? Well, it's back with another Nintendo collaboration, this time celebrating the Mario Kart franchise.

The company is launching two distinct watch designs based on the Mario Kart franchise, and while they certainly look the part, both come packing pretty heavy price tags.

The first is a standard Chronograph and will be limited to 3000 pieces. It'll come housed in a 44-mm steel case adorned with adorable little Mario Kart references, along with the Mario Kart logo inscribed on the black polished ceramic tachymeter bezel. As a nice little easter egg, the date window will also showcase classic Mario Kart items including the banana and bullet bill in lieu of the date number.

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 X Mario Kart Limited Edition (Chronograph) will cost $4,300 / £3,550.

Next up is the Chronograph Tourbillon model, which will be limited to just 250 pieces. This one comes in a slightly larger 45-mm case made of high-performance grade 5 titanium with a screwed sapphire case back adorned with the Mario kart engraving and numbered 'XXX/250'. The mechanism includes Mario himself, a blue shell, and a bullet bill moving around in rhythm.

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 X Mario Kart Limited Edition (Chronograph Tourbillon) will cost... Are you ready..? $25,600 / £21,250.

Both watches come with a black calf leather strap with contrasting red stitching and lining and a custom embossed pattern. The folding buckle also comes personalised with Mario 'M' symbol. The watches will come presented in specially developed black watch boxes with matching travel pouches.

You can register for early access to the Chronograph model right now on the official website until October 17th; early access sales go live on October 20th. The Chronograph Tourbillon model is not yet available, but you can register for notifications on its availability.

Who pays that much money for a wristband keeping you tied to a clock constantly, in a world where it is hard to, for just an hour or so even (oh irony), for once NOT be tied to a clock? Reminds me of a recent story where a local housing project manager was robbed of his 300 000 euro watch, and all I could think was: my sister and her partner are both stuck in a 40 years, 40 hours a week slave contract to pay off their house of about that price... Just so you (some words that would get me a permanent ban of the entirety of the highly censored internet) could buy a watch and act the poor victim when a poor man who cannot buy a house steals your watch? And you can shamelessly (even PROUDLY) mention that watch's price?

You see, I was trying to get in line to buy one of these, but when it was my turn, a blue shell shoved me to the back of the line, mama Mia!

Just collect some coins over at the Mushroom Kingdom, people. They're lying (and floating) around all over the place!

There’s no excuse for this. A watch shouldn’t cost that much money and Nintendo shouldn’t get involved with disproportionately expensive luxury items. I love Nintendo games but I wish they’d have better taste for some of their collaborations.

They're cool. Just way too much $ for me!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is my favourite video game of all time.

NGL, I'd like those watches. But only because of the exclusivity of them as a Mario Kart fan. Fancy watches don't appeal to me - that market is designed only to tap those trapped in a world I want no part of.

Maybe I'll just register my interest...

Nice watch of you are on the board of directors at Nintendo. For normal people, just get a Casio or Seiko if you're fancy. Works just as well.

I'm not sorry that nothing that I do fills the pockets of the gangsters behind the tax extortion system of human slavery... On the contrary. If this is not what you expected, stop assuming where you don't know, and if it is what you expected, just try and respect yourself and other beings a bit more, that just want to BE, not be exploited and stressed by fictional things like "the state" and other corporations, or "time", let alone "company time".

@Shambo Not sure if you're aware of this but watches only go up in price, especially those that are made in limited quantities.

IF you bought the 25k one and kept it in perfect condition, you could probably sell it for 35k+ in 5-10 years. Significantly more if not many others are available for sale at that point. That's why people buy such things. It's more an investment than vanity, unless you're so rich that you just wear it all the time and let it get worn down, which I agree would be stupid (but outside of billionaires, generally doesn't happen).

Now, obviously that's a major issue with capitalism itself that it works this way when people are starving. But to answer your original question of "why buy it just to be tied to a clock", nobody who would buy this would actually be looking at it.

My facts are not subjective as you try to make them. You clearly have a certain point of view of things, life and society, which is fine. But making this personal and coming to a gaming site to make statements and pass judgement is not.

of course I like the most expensive one. haha but I wouldn't spend that kind of money for a watch. watches are for people that just want some ice on their wrist. nothing more. kind of becoming obsolete with smart watches, cell phones etc.

@Shambo I understand your view points and agree. some people are just vapid and empty vessels attaching themselves to stuff. but once that's gone, what do they become? its best to be the human you want to be, and to stop living through other peoples eyes. meaning who cares what others think of us and what we choose to do. so from what I gathered you are doing things to help animals etc. and I respect that.

Its personal preference, if you or anyone else for that matter does not see the value in watches then fair enough, but suggesting things should only cost so much and the people buying them somehow wrong is not an objective fact, merely a personal stance on the issue.

The cost of an item will also be relative to the person purchasing it, for example the person buying the more expensive Mario watch will have more than enough means to do so, and to them will be the same as somebody buying a $50 watch with more modest means. You can't be really suggesting no expensive items can't be made just because you have no interest on such things.

It's just too much of a restrictive view if things.

You can be a good person and still like personal possessions, there are a lot of people that just love to spout all this ivory tower stuff, and suggest their own projected reasons why people buy nice things etc, but it's all personal opinions at the end off the day. I mean feel free to suggest you yourselves would not personally buy such things, but having a go at people that do is just plain wrong imho.

As for smart watches they are not going to replace luxury Swiss watches anytime soon, as people buy them not only for their function, but also their look and feel, I don't wear any jewellery as it's just not my thing, but I did buy a $1000 Tag 20 years ago, and have worn it every day, so I would suggest I have got more than my moneys worth out of it, which again people do not consider, they simply look at the price of something, and overlook how long you may own it, and it's price broken down over that period.

Watches after a certain price become jewellery. There's only so much technology that can go into an analogue watch, so the rest of the price comes from stupid shiny stuff for people who want to wave their d*** around.

Plus you get it attached to a bit of baby cow skin.

Very interesting article, the bit that struck me the most was this part.

Pretty nice and I definitely want one, but also impossibly pricey for me. I could probably pay off what remains of my mortgage with the price of the second one!

For those who have issues with whoever ends up with these on their wrists, if they earned the money fair and square then there shouldn't be a problem with it. Lots of us on this site have a Switch and sometimes other consoles as well, but no one's busting our chops for not spending that money on those less fortunate than us. Let the (legally) rich spend their money on what they want too.

I would argue that necklaces /chains, earrings, and other piercings can count, but yes, as far as mainstream stuff, watches are really the only thing. However £25k for one still baffles me, and that is only the low end of the scale.

I can see a value as an investment, but a Mario watch??

@Beefcakeyamato I would agree that watches are less popular today due to smart phones etc. However I will still rock a watch probably until I disappear from this world as I have 40 years of conditioning behind me of that's how I find out what the time is. Watches still hold a practical application for many.

Can't teach an old dog, new tricks and all that.

I said in another comment of course I like the most expensive one. because usually I like the most expensive things, but could never justify the worth for the tag. which is what most of the comments already said. "nice watch too expensive for a what it is" if you personally justify that. by all means, buy it. 😉

To be honest $25000 is pretty high for a Tag, you can get a pretty nice watch in their range for $1000 or so, and it will give you years of use.

I bought an Omega Seamaster recently, been looking at them for ages paid $5500.00, and that is pretty much the lower end of their range, Tag are pretty awesome value for a luxury Swiss watch.

Justification is as you said a very personal thing, to some a watch is too expensive but they may see value in something else, people can like different things.

We all will justify the price of something we personally see the value in.

@Duncanballs I understand that.im probably around the same age as you. but if someone can justify spending 25k on a watch go for it. I'm saying I wouldn't. even thought that's the one that I would buy lol out of the two. an example, even if I was a multi millionaire, I wouldn't buy a house I cant upkeep myself etc. but I would probably buy up land instead.

I'm glad you can have that ability to buy what you enjoy. but also even if I had your dime, I wouldn't just based on attracting unwanted attention, if you catch my drift. haha we are at a point that the disparity between people is growing by the day. and that creates desperation. just be safe out there.

I feel like this would be niche as an investment. It would seem to me that most people that invest in luxury watches to flip later tend to get certain tried and true models that they know will maintain/increase in value. I feel like only the overlap of nerd hardcore and luxury watch investor would be interested and that shrinks a small base to start with.

@Beefcakeyamato no I agree. For me personally, I wouldn't spend that on a watch myself even if I could afford it. I would be too worried about damaging it if I am honest.

@Beefcakeyamato well what I am saying is that this seems like it would be niche among luxury watch collectors. Watches tend to be very conservative in design for the ones that command high value. They usually aren’t themed. Not to say an investor can’t flip this later but I feel like the potential customers will shrink vs owning the same watch type but un licensed. This seems to fall more towards the mainstream collectable fashion (which is usually worn for cred than owned for cred) but is priced a bit beyond what that demographic would pay. Or at least it seems so. A person might pay a grand or two for sneakers or a hand bag, but 20k for a mario kart watch seems out there. Granted I prefer smartwatches and pocket watches which are usually cheaper to invest in.

Any $25,000 piece of Mario Kart memorabilia had darn well better be fully driveable, and this thing looks awfully short on legroom.

Without a doubt, which is why I bought a pretty normal looking one, that did not stand out too much.

Men do wear all that other stuff, but for me a watch is as much as I want to wear.

I think the key with this will be the only 250 made, it's a very niche product at this amount, and I bet it will be pretty much impossible to buy the $25,000 one, even if you do have the money.

Outside of the VERY tiny details, you can barely tell that they’re MK themed. Definetly not worth all that money. And according to my (probably) EXTREMELY scuffed calculations, you could buy around 426 copies of MK8D (in USD, the price is $60) INSTEAD of the pricey one and still have $40 dollars left over to buy… an extremely cheap Walmart watch. 60 x 426 = 25560. This took way too long to type and probably wasn’t worth it.

$25,600 is MSRP. I wonder what scalpers will charge...

That's the thing - do you think they are deliberately inflating the price due to the Nintendo association? They probably will all sell, esp as there are only 250, but I wonder if, as an investment, they are not as wise as other watches. It is very niche, and, to my mind anyway, not something you would immediately associate with Ninty.

You never know with these things, but I suppose you could be right.

This car watch is half the price of a real one

It looks nice, but, I think adding Mario to the watch is tacky and makes it look cheap. Same as if it were Elmer Fudd, Homer Simpson or any other cartoon character.
