Bentley orders the destruction of clothing in fashion brand trademark shops-BBC News

A luxury car manufacturer was ordered to destroy a series of clothing products after losing a trademark battle with a fashion company.

In 2019, the High Court ruled that Bentley Motors infringed the trademark of Manchester-based Bentley Apparel.

This means that the car company cannot use the name Bentley in its British clothing line.

Now, after failing to appeal the ruling, the manufacturer has been told to destroy the clothes with the Bentley logo before February 3.

The 2019 ruling means that Bentley Motors will no longer be able to use the name alone or in conjunction with its unique logo in its clothing collections in the UK.

The court decided that in the future it must also limit its scope to "jackets, silk ties, hats and scarves."

Christopher Lees, director of Bentley Clothing, said the company is pleased that the matter has been resolved.

"We tried to be very reasonable, but we got nothing. They tried to deprive us of our rights, so our business was really affected," he said.

"But now, finally, it seems we can finally move on."

This clothing retailer was founded by businessman Gerald Bentley in 1962 and was later acquired by the Lees family in 1990.

The dispute began in 1998 when the auto giant was approached on the brand conflict issue, and the High Court initiated a lawsuit in 2017 after years of negotiations.

Bentley Motors tried to cancel the Bentley trademark that the clothing company had held in the British Intellectual Property Office since 1982, but was unsuccessful.

The manufacturer said it was "very disappointed" but "fully respected" the judgment.

It also stated that Bentley Apparel rejected their request to donate inventory to charity after removing the brand, saying the move was "a very shameful time when it was so needed."

However, Mr. Lees stated that although the neck label can be removed without destroying most garments, it is impossible to remove the brand from the fabric of the product.

"I believe charities will not appreciate clothes with holes," he said.

At its peak, Lees’ clothing group-run by Robert and his sons Christopher and Richard, who died in May-employed 400 employees and worked in Wigan, Stretford, Ruthho There are factories near Ulm, Rippenden, Halifax, and Ashton Underline.

The company has provided clothing for companies such as Burberry and Aquascutum.

Bentley Motors, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, has a manufacturing plant in Crewe, Cheshire.

In June of this year, it announced plans to lay off up to 1,000 employees.
