CAZENOVIA — On December 3, the Fashion Research Project of Cazenovia College hosted a "Sewing Patch Party" fundraising event at The Key Consignment Shop.

Community members are invited to bring their old clothing to the store, choose to buy from various patches, and then watch fashion students sew patches to create a new look. You can also buy DIY patch kits.

The fashion studies course is composed of students majoring in fashion design and fashion marketing.

The patch party fundraiser is part of a larger effort to raise US$25,000 to support the continued development of the fashion research program, especially the annual fashion show production and launch event and the Look Again sustainable fashion series.

"[Through patch parties], we are trying to inspire sustainability in the fashion world," said Hannah Garrett, a fashion design professional. "This is the meaning of our entire Look Again series."

The student-led judging fashion show is held every spring as part of a two-semester high-level capstone experience.

Traditionally, fashion shows are held in an off-campus venue large enough to accommodate hundreds of guests. Last year, due to the restrictions of COVID-19, Apex students decided to make a video to show the student's design while still gaining experience in planning and holding a fashion show.

"[Last year's event] went very smoothly," said Allison McGrath, a fashion designer major. "It's better than I expected. The video was really well prepared. [They] did a great job in this regard."

The college's 49th annual exhibition next spring will also be presented in digital form.

"When they appear on the runway, you can't see their essence," Garrett pointed out. "Through the video, you can view the clothing longer and see details up close."

However, unlike last year, the students plan to hold a video conference locally for alumni, industry professionals, current and future students, and students’ families to participate.

"[This will] be similar to a standard show, but [not] like a typical fashion show [has] so many people," Megan Lawson-Clark MA, the director of the annual fashion show and an MBA. ) Say. "... We hope that in the near future we will be able to return to mixed formats like in the past, with real-time network components and live standard runway productions with our large population. Digital fashion shows are now part of the industry, but many designs The teacher began to bring the live fashion show back to its original place. Our students are ready to enter the industry and learn how to [do] research and organize an event that involves all the logistics of face-to-face and digital fashion production."

Lawson-Clark is also an associate professor of fashion studies and the head of the fashion marketing project. He said that since August 2021, these seniors have been studying all aspects of event management, including fundraising.

"The funds raised [through this year's event] will help cover the cost of venues, catering, video production, and any supplies needed to host the kick-off party," she said.

Look Again is a sustainable clothing brand launched by students in the product development class of visiting lecturer Elise Thayer last year.

This two-semester course provides hands-on learning in developing innovative, customer-oriented apparel for specific target markets.

Students learn about design, production and sales concepts through collaborative projects with local industry partners.

Both semesters ("Product Development Principles" and "Product Development Applications") are devoted to the design and production of upgraded and recycled clothing.

On April 30, 2021, the fashion show launched their ready-to-wear collection under the Look Again brand at The Key.

According to Thayer, with the help of two interns, these projects can continue to expand and enhance the Look Again product line throughout the summer. This fall, the course expanded the product line to include home accessories and new collections such as bleached flannel, mixed-print T-shirts and patch jeans.

"Students continue to research fashion trends so they can turn unused and unwanted clothes into stylish unique items," Thayer said. "... The funds raised for Look Again will help the development of the brand and we can drive the brand forward by maintaining relevance and freshness. An example of recent brand growth includes our recent application for the Look Again name and logo Registered trademark. Fundraising is a great way to involve students and let them understand the process of creating, selling and maintaining fashion collections."

After the sewing patch party, customers are invited to buy the latest products in the Look Again series.

Located at 66 Albany Street, The Key is a charity consignment and donation shop founded in 1960 by women from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. The two-story retail space provides a variety of clothing, footwear and household items at a fraction of the original cost.
