Irma Vorbeck: How to properly wear a name tag

The purpose of a name tag is to distinguish who you are. This important accessory renders a valuable service when worn in the workplace, conventions, campaigning and social events. However, there is a proper and effective way to wear them.

First, keep in mind name recognition does matter and you will want to wear the best suited ID badge to accomplish your desired goal. There are several different kinds of name IDs available: magnetic, clip-on, lanyard, pin-on, custom and adhesive. The advantage of magnetic, clip-on and lanyard badges is that they do not pull or snag garment as a pin-on would. The benefit of a custom badge is that it can be of your own personal design. Adhesive name labels are convenient and often used at more casual events and gatherings. (Be sure to print name legibly.)

Second, be mindful of proper placement of name tag so that it can be seen clearly and easily:

The traditional and best placement for a name tag is several inches below right shoulder. (This is because we shake with our right hands.)

Women, be mindful not to put name tag too low as not to draw attention to chest.

Use the left side for corsages, decorative pins and broaches.

The lanyard length should be adjusted where name plate is not too low and thus hangs straight. Tuck cord neatly under collar.

Campaign buttons are to be placed on right lapel a little above name ID.

Always make sure name tag is secure and kept straight. (Taking the extra time to select an outfit that would prevent name tag from drooping, going askew, snagging etc. will give a more professional look.)

An additional suggestion for the men: wear a shirt that has a right pocket to accommodate name tag or campaign button.

Today department and large chain stores often choose to operate on a different criteria. Their employees' name and other information is worn on their left. Another exception that I have observed is at a popular home improvement supplier where employees' names are monogrammed on the front of their work apron.

Now, with this information we can be "perfectly polished" by wearing our name tags correctly.
