LEETONIA — The Leetonia school district is incorporating a new identification system that will help track students and visitors.

Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham reported to the school board the district is using technology from Transfinder and Zonar to have GPS on buses and monitor students, staff and visitors on campus.

Dunham said students will scan their badges while getting on the bus. Their parents can download an app on their smart phones to track their child’s bus. Students will also use the badges in the cafeteria, making the lines more efficient since students do not have to remember their PIN numbers.

Additionally, the badges will help staff, particularly substitutes, identify students, let the administration know who is in the building at all times and track attendance regarding tardies.

Dunham said the badges will be phased in over the next week.

Dunham also reported the district made “significant improvement” on the state report card.

The state this year changed to a star rating. Leetonia earned a 3 for achievement, 3 for progress, 5 for gap closing, 4 for graduation and 2 for early literacy.

The rating system’s five stars mean the following: five, significantly exceeds state standard; four, exceeds state standards; three, meets state standards; two, needs support to meet state standards; and one, needs significant support to meet state standards.

“I’m very pleased with the efforts of the students and staff…I think over the next several years we have items in place that we will see an upward trend (in results),” Dunham said.

Dunham also reported on a full-scale evacuation drill held Sept. 16 in which all students were out of the building in under 90 seconds.

The drill also simulated transportation of students K-4 and 5-12 to reunification sites off campus. He said students were out of class a total of 25 minutes for the drill.

Additionally Dunham reported the district received a second Ohio Bronze Award for its Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) program for the 2021-2022 school year. The district received its first Bronze Award for grades 7-12.

In other business, the board approved a memorandum of understanding with the Village of Leetonia for school resource officer (SRO) services. Officer William Webb will serve at the SRO for the 2022-2023 school year, with the district paying the village $25.84 per hour for 40 hours or less each week and $38.76 for each hour over 40 in any given week. The agreement allows for the hire of additional officers if needed at the same rate.

The board also approved supplemental contracts for the 2022-2023 school year to Tyler Cintron for high school student council advisor, Benjamin Johnson Bowers for boys head track coach, Kaitlyn Culp for high school cheer advisor, Christa Stark and Amy Gibson for yearbook co-advisors, Michelle Long for junior high track coach, Amy Gibson for athletic study table, Randall Rodick for eSports coordinator, Kaitlyn Deal for junior high volleyball coach, Todd Kibby for head golf coach and Shannon Cutrer for girls head track coach (corrected).

The board also approved Mary Rice as a “counselor consultant” for the 2022-2023 school year at a rate of $35 per hour, not to exceed 10 hours during the school year; Alisha Hancox as a three-hour cook; Amy Gibson as Before/After Care Certificated Staff for the 2022/23 school year at the rate of $25 per hour; and Gretchen Hull and John McIlduff as home instruction tutors.

Additionally the board accepted Harold Kelley’s resignation as bus driver; and the donations of $300 from Steel Valley Naturals to the baseball supplemental, and $686 from Plastic Pallet and $685.80 from Brian and Melissa Brock to the football supplemental.

The board changed its next meeting to 6 p.m. Oct. 25 in the elementary library.
