Update: A principal in Princeton changed her decision to cancel Halloween and Valentine's Day celebrations in an effort to create a more inclusive atmosphere in the school.

Planet Princeton reported on Friday that school leaders have changed course after the public fought back, especially complaints from parents.

The previous story is as follows.

Princeton-The new principal of Riverside Elementary School is canceling two popular holidays that students celebrate during the school year, and plans to replace them with activities she considers more inclusive.

Princeton Planet reported that in an email to his parents on Tuesday, Ebony Latimer announced the cancellation of the traditional Halloween parade in Riverside and plans to abandon Valentine's Day.

According to an email copy obtained by Princeton Planet, the alternative to Halloween will be what Latimer calls a "book bonanza," in which students "will be required to dress up as their favorite book characters."

Lattimer said students can still march under the guise of their chosen role, and this change aims to increase two school district goals, namely academic performance and student attendance.

According to reports, Latimer said that the previous Halloween celebrations “excluded many of our students” but did not elaborate.

She said that in February, Latimer will replace Valentine's Day with "Upstander Day" to "highlight our students and riverside normative culture."

The Oxford English Dictionary defines "upstander" as "a person who speaks or takes action to support a person or cause, especially a person who intervenes on behalf of a person who has been attacked or bullied."

According to MyCentralJersey.com, two 2013 Watchung Hills high school graduates created the Change.org petition in 2014, asking Oxford University to add the term.

The Princeton Planet report did not include more details on Upstander Day activities at Riverside Elementary School.
