Ron DeSantis' White Boots Steal Focus As Ian Recovery Continues | Across Florida, FL Patch

FLORIDA — At least 89 people are dead as search and rescue efforts continue more than a week after Hurricane Ian hit Florida's southwest coast as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. Floridians are returning to homes and communities that are unrecognizable. Nearly 200,000 homes and businesses still have no power.

However, the internet and late-night TV hosts alike were distracted by something else in Florida this week: Gov. Ron DeSantis touring hurricane damage during a Monday visit to DeSoto County sporting a pair of bright-white waders.

Breaking news? Not hardly, but the sheer amount of memes, tweets, and other satire generated by the Republican governor's fashion choice could suggest otherwise. Most compared him to Nancy Sinatra or the Green M&M, asking, "Who wore it better?"

Late-night TV hosts also latched on to the governor's boots.

"Governor DeSantis has been touring damaged areas to let residents know they’re not forgotten — and one thing that few will ever forget is the white knee-high boots he was sporting," Stephen Colbert said on his show Wednesday. "Looks a little less "governor on the go' and more 'governor of the Go-Gos.'"

Jimmy Kimmel also chimed in during a segment on his show.

"You’re not allowed to pass a 'Don’t say gay' bill then show up in public dressed like Nancy Sinatra," Kimmel said.

Kimmel was referencing controversial legislation signed into law by DeSantis in March. The Parental Rights in Education bill, called the "Don't Say Gay" bill by critics, banned classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through grade three or "in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students."

While the internet laughed at DeSantis' waders, President Joe Biden praised the governor's efforts and response to Hurricane Ian while visiting the state Wednesday. DeSantis also warmly welcomed Biden to Florida and said he’s "thankful everyone has banded together."

But the president had his own gaffe Wednesday, when he was caught dropping the F-bomb on a live microphone as he wrapped up his Florida trip.

President Joe Biden was caught on a hot mic dropping an F-bomb in a chat with Fort Myers Beach Mayor Ray Murphy after the joint press conference with DeSantis.

"No one (expletive) with a Biden," the president said, according to Business Insider.

"Yeah, you're goddamn right," Murphy replied.

There was no drama, no finger-pointing, and no partisan political antics between the president and governor — at least for a rare, brief moment.

"I think he’s done a good job," Biden told reporters, according to Politico. "We have very different political philosophies, but we’ve worked hand in glove."

Others, meanwhile, were quick to point out where the focus should be: Not on the white boots, but on continued search, rescue, and cleanup efforts as Floridians struggle to find a sense of normalcy post-Ian.

"I'm not sure what the obsession over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ white rubber boots says about our culture," Ingrid Jacques wrote for USA Today. "But it says something. And I don’t think it’s good."
